What if your trip could do more than just inspire you? what if it could restore ecosystems, support local communities, and actively contribute to the future of a destination? Just outside Bogotá, in the Andean landscapes of Cundinamarca, a day without itineraries, guests, or logistics turned into something far more meaningful: a hands-on ecological restoration experience in a high Andean ecosystem that has faced decades of deforestation and land transformation, where 260 native trees were planted as part of a long-term effort to regenerate the forest, an experience that goes beyond impact metrics and invites travelers to connect with the land in a deeper, more intentional way.
Travel That Goes Beyond the Journey
Sustainable travel is often reduced to numbers: carbon footprints, emissions, offsetting, but on the ground, it feels different: it’s about reconnecting with nature, understanding territories beyond their beauty, slowing down, and becoming part of something that will continue to grow long after the journey ends; a shift that reflects a growing travel trend where experiences are not only immersive, but also contribute positively to the places visited, blending exploration with purpose in a way that feels authentic and lasting.

Why Native Trees Matter
In Colombia’s high Andean forests, where up to 70–90% of ecosystems have been transformed due to deforestation, cattle expansion, and non-native species restoration initiatives like planting native trees (such as Andean walnut, aliso, chicalá, mortiño, and pino romerón) are essential to recover biodiversity, capture carbon, and rebuild ecological balance; many of these efforts are carried out alongside local communities and environmental partners, highlighting a key principle of this new wave of travel: real impact happens when travelers engage with destinations in a more conscious way. For those interested in going deeper, there are experiences and journeys designed around this approach, where sustainability is not an add-on, but part of the journey itself, offering a way to travel that feels both meaningful and aligned with the future of tourism. Each of the 260 trees planted was carefully selected to support biodiversity, soil recovery, and long-term carbon capture.
We worked with native species such as: Andean walnut (Juglans neotropica), Aliso (Alnus acuminata), Chicalá (Tecoma stans), Cucharo (Myrsine guianensis), Laurel de cera (Morella parvifolia), Mortiño (Hesperomeles goudotiana), Pino romerón (Retrophyllum rospigliosii), Juco garrocho (Viburnum triphyllum)
These species play a key role in:
✔ Capturing carbon
✔ Providing habitat for wildlife
✔ Restoring ecological balance
✔ Supporting long-term forest regeneration
Community at the Heart of Impact
This initiative was carried out alongside local actors and environmental partners, reinforcing something we strongly believe:
- Sustainable tourism in Colombia only works when communities are at the center.
- Through this approach, we: Generate local employment, Support knowledge exchange, Strengthen community-led conservation efforts
- Because protecting nature is not just about planting trees… It’s about empowering the people who protect the land every day

From Carbon Footprint to Climate Action
This initiative is part of a broader sustainability strategy with Atuca Foundation. Through our partnership with environmental programs, we work to: Measure our carbon footprint, Reduce emissions across our operations; and, compensate through ecological restoration.
For us, this is not about “offsetting” as a trend. It’s about taking responsibility for the impact we generate as a travel company.
