Founded in 1525 by Spanish conquistador Rodrigo de Bastidas, Santa Marta is the oldest city in South America. Rich in colonial architecture and coastal charm, it’s also the gateway to both history and nature. The city is home to La Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, the hacienda where Simón Bolívar, liberator of South America, spent his final days.
Though Gabo was born in Aracataca, Santa Marta and the surrounding region, with its heat, rhythm, and Caribbean character, deeply influenced the atmosphere of his novels.
