The weather in Colombia depends on the region instead of the season. Travellers planning to visit more than one region in Colombia will most likely need to pack for different climates.
Andes Region – Bogota, Medellin, Villa de Leyva and the Coffee Region are located in the Andes. Since it’s a mountainous area, the weather varies depending on the altitude. The average temperature could be between 15-23°C at 2,000-3,000 m.a.s.l, between 20-23°C at 1,000-2,000 m.a.s.l and around 28°C in destinations located closer to sea level. Travellers should pack a medium to thick jacket, long pants, an umbrella and perhaps even a scarf for Bogota.
The Caribbean Region – The areas that run along Colombia’s Caribbean coast, such as Cartagena, Barranquilla, Santa Marta and Tayrona Park, are hot and humid. The average temperature hovers around 30°C. The temperature in the desert of La Guajira can reach more than 40°C at midday. Travellers should pack tank tops, shorts or dresses made out of light, breathable fabric. Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses.
The Pacific Region – This region is also hot, but sometimes feels cooler than the Caribbean Region because of frequent rain. The average temperature is 28°C with temperatures decreasing further inland. Nuquí, located on the Pacific coast, is where many people go for whale watching tours. Be sure to pack clothes made from breathable fabric, a rain jacket and umbrella.
The Amazon Region – Since the Amazon Jungle is a tropical rain forest, the climate is hot and humid with average temperatures around 28°C. The warmest month is usually November and the coolest month is usually July. Be sure to pack bug repellent, tank tops, shorts and a light jacket for the evenings.
The Plains – Colombia’s Eastern Plains, or Los Llanos, are hot and dry. Destinations such as Villavicencio, Yopal and Caño Cristales can have average temperatures between 25°C and 28°C. The use of sunscreen is prohibited in Caño Cristales for environmental reasons. Travellers should pack breathable clothing that also protects skin from the sun, as well as hats and sunglasses.
