After breakfast, we will begin our exploration of the Tatacoa Desert, the second largest arid zone in Colombia after the Guajira Peninsula. The day’s activities involve short drives between sectors, allowing for a comfortable and immersive experience while discovering this unique landscape.
During our visit, we will explore the stunning landscapes of the red desert (Cusco sector), as well as the surreal, moon-like terrain of the grey desert (Los Hoyos sector), each located at a short driving distance from one another.
The red desert is characterized by its striking labyrinths carved by water and erosion over time, with its intense reddish color reflecting the high iron content in the soil. In this area, we will also visit the Tree of Wishes (El Árbol de los Deseos). According to local belief, anyone who finds a heart-shaped folded leaf and unfolds it without damaging it will be granted the opportunity to make a wish.
In contrast, the grey desert offers an entirely different scenery, with ash-colored rock formations dotted with small patches of vegetation, creating a landscape reminiscent of the moon. Here, we will visit the Valley of the Ghosts, named for the rock formations that resemble mysterious figures emerging from the earth.
We will also visit the local museum to learn more about the geological history and paleontological richness of the region. To complement the experience, we will enjoy a relaxing boat ride along the Magdalena River, where we can appreciate the surrounding landscapes and the importance of this iconic river in the life and culture of the area.
After this enriching day, we will return to the hotel for a rest.
