See what daily life is like in one of Bogota's favelas!This meaningful and unique tour begins in La Concordia, a bohemian and historic corner of Bogotá. As we explore its colorful streets full of graffiti art and local shops, you’ll hear stories that reveal the soul of La Candelaria, the city’s iconic colonial district , told from the perspective of the people who live there. From there, we make our way to El Chorro de Quevedo, the legendary square where Bogotá was founded. It’s here that we cross into Barrio Egipto, a neighborhood once marked by danger, now rising as a symbol of transformation.Led by former gang members turned community guides, you’ll walk through Egipto’s streets, uncovering the invisible borders that long separated it from the rest of the city. You’ll discover powerful street art, learn about the history of violence and reconciliation, and witness how tourism has become a tool for peacebuilding and pride. The tour ends with a heartfelt visit to the home of a local family, where you'll share a traditional snack. While enjoying this moment, you’ll hear their personal stories; raw, honest, and filled with resilience, offering a unique and intimate connection to life in one of Bogotá’s most authentic neighborhoods. Detailed Itinerary
Once we arrive in Egipto, our hosts will share insights into the cultural traditions and routines practiced within the community. We'll also learn about the political, social, and economic struggles and triumphs that locals have faced over the years. This exploration will reveal how the country’s challenging history has directly impacted the people living here. As we delve deeper into the neighborhood, we'll gain awareness of areas that are off-limits to us and some community members due to what are known as “invisible borders.”
A highlight of our tour will be a visit to one of the oldest local markets in Bogotá. Here, we will have the opportunity to learn about various Colombian fruits and try some of the exotic and delicious varieties for which Colombia is famous. As we stroll through the neighborhood streets, our hosts will share different stories about their past and life in Egipto. Some of these stories will be amusing, while others will provide a more sobering perspective on the challenges these individuals have encountered in their community. Our journey will be accompanied by stunning bird’s-eye views of Bogotá, as well as engaging hip-hop performances from our hosts. We will visit our host’s home, where we will enjoy a traditional Colombian snack along with fresh juice made from local fruit. You will have time to take pictures of the beautiful views and ask our hosts questions. We will then return to the starting point of the tour with our guide and community hosts, marking the conclusion of our experience.
