During this birding day tour in Bogota you will have the opportunity to visit the surrounding areas of Chingaza Natural Park. This area is famous for its spectacular scenery of montane elfin forest and paramo. Plus, this is where you can find most of the Eastern Andean highland (near) endemic bird species.

We will also visit a quaint hummingbird observatory to spend a few hours enjoying more than 14 species of hummingbirds feeding in the gardens surrounding the Spanish-style house. You will also enjoy a delicious traditional Colombian lunch before we take you back to the city.

Surrounding areas of Chingaza National Natural Park (IBA)

Chingaza National Natural Park and its surrounding areas are perfect for birding. The region of Colombia offers diverse ecosystems, including cloud forests and paramos, which create ideal habitats for a wide range of bird species.

We can spot species such as the golden-bellied starfrontlet, the white-capped tanager, and the Andean condor amongst many other species. We can also see hummingbirds, toucans, and migratory birds.

The tranquility and great ecosystems surrounding the natural park make it a perfect places for birding near Bogota, Colombia.

Hummingbird Observatory

No need to travel very far to spot different species of hummingbirds. You will have the chance to observe 14 different species of Hummingbirds in this observatory located at 9km of Bogota.

Concerned by the preservation of the habitats of these birds, this family started to plant trees and flowers in order to contribute to their perpetuation. They've also placed hummingbird feeders in their garden so visitors can come admire them.

The serene environment of this place allows birders to spot species such as the black-chested buzzard-eagle, blue-throated starfrontlet, and various tanagers and hummingbirds. It is a real paradise for photographers!

Departure Time: 5 am

We will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to visit the surrounding areas of Parque Nacional Natural Chingaza, where we will carry out birdwatching activities in the buffer zone that borders the park. This Important Bird Area (IBA), located about 2 hours from Bogotá, lies in the mountains outside the city and offers easy access to well-preserved montane elfin forest and páramo ecosystems.

You will spend approximately 3 hours birdwatching with an expert guide in the areas surrounding the park. During our exploration, you may have the chance to observe species such as the Brown-breasted Parakeet (Pyrrhura calliptera), Green-bearded Helmetcrest (Oxypogon guerinii), Silvery-throated Spinetail (Synallaxis subpudica), Blue-throated Starfrontlet (Coeligena helianthea), and the Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle (Geranoaetus melanoleucus), among other characteristic high-Andean birds.

Afterwards, we will transfer you to La Calera to visit a beautiful hummingbird observatory. Watch these colourful creatures flit around in the quaint courtyard of this charming observatory nestled between the mountains. We will also take you to enjoy a traditional Colombian lunch, where you will learn more about Colombian culture before returning to Bogotá.
