Colombia's Coffee Region is home to beautiful landscapes, unique experiences and of course some of the best coffee in the world. Colombia's Coffee Region offers hikes, Colombia's famous wax palms and even a coffee theme park. Here are some of the activities travellers love about the Coffee Region:
Valle de Cocora
The Valle de Cocora is a breathtaking part of the Los Nevados National Natural Park, home to Colombia's national tree: the Colombian Wax Palm (palmas de cera). The best way to see these famous palms is to either go on a hike through the Valle de Cocora or take a guided horseback riding trail up the mountains. The valley is the primary location of these species of palm and thousands of these unique, 60m tall, slender palms are growing within the park. The surreal landscapes of the Cocora Valley stretch far and wide through the mountains and are home to many endangered species of flowers and plants. The valley also provides a great location for bird watching, mountain biking, horse riding, rafting and river swimming.
Coffee Farms/ Plantations
A trip to Colombia's coffee region wouldn't be complete without a trip to a local coffee plantation, where you can discover the secrets of making the perfect coffee, how they produce Colombia's famous coffee and what it takes to grow the perfect coffee beans. At coffee plantations or farms they have tours where you can look around the farms, and discover how they use other plants such as pineapples, bananas and berries to keep the ground totally organic and free from pesticides. They even let you taste the fresh, straight from the plant coffee.
Salento
Salento is a unique countryside town located in the coffee region: it's colonial and numerous colourful buildings make for a unique insight into life within the coffee region and an unforgettable stop on your trip. Salento is home to a large number of coffee farms and plantations, artisanal craftspeople and great food- Trucha (fish) and patacones are a local delicacy. This small town provides a great stop over destination with a number of hostels, hotels and beautiful farm houses available for rent.
Parque del Cafe
Parque del Cafe is one of the most unique places in the coffee region: it's not somewhere for everyone but for theme park lovers, Parque del Cafe is a must. Parque del Cafe is a theme park with a variety of rides such as water rides, roller coasters, gondolas, and trains amongst many other attractions. The park also has unique coffee related shows which give an insight into the history of the region, its importance and of course how to make great coffee. This park is situated in a large area of the coffee region surrounded by individual coffee farms, crops and surreal landscapes which provide a beautiful backdrop for the park.
Landscapes
Everything about Colombia's coffee region is unique, but the most beautiful aspect of it are its landscapes. Whether visiting the Valle de Cocora or just driving around the mountains, the landscape is unlike anywhere else; breathtaking sights are around every corner.
