If someone had told me that Colombia offered a true wildlife safari, the kind where you can spot capybaras by the hundreds, watch giant anteaters cross open plains, and witness sunsets that turn the entire sky orange, I probably wouldn’t have believed it. But then I visited Los Llanos, the Eastern Plains of Colombia, and everything changed. What I thought would be “just another nature trip” became one of the most surprising experiences I’ve had in the country. Colombia is already known for its jungles, mountains, beaches, and cities… but Los Llanos feels like stepping into a completely different world.
Encompassing the Colombian departments of Meta, Casanare, Vichada, and Arauca (as well as some parts of Guaviare and Guainía), the llanos is a vast tropical plain made up of savannas, woodlands, and grasslands. It lies to the east of the Colombian Andes and the north of the Amazon, and is shared between Colombia and Venezuela. For half of the year (between May and October) huge swathes of it are flooded: so much so that when the first Europeans arrived in the region from the east, they supposedly believed they had reached the Pacific Ocean; such was the size of the body of water in front of them. And whether that’s true or not, it neatly illustrates the contrast between the wet and dry seasons in the region.
The llanos are also remarkably biodiverse and home to some of the best ecotourism experiences in Colombia.
A Landscape You Wouldn’t Expect in Colombia
Los Llanos stretches east of the Andes; a vast region of rivers, open savannas, palm forests, ranch culture, and wildlife everywhere you look. It feels wild, untouched, and immense. And the beauty? It hits you immediately.
Every sunrise looks like a soft watercolor painting, and every sunset feels like the sky is on fire. Even if there were no animals (there are thousands), just the landscapes alone would make this trip worth it.
The Wildlife Encounter I Didn’t See Coming
I wasn’t prepared for the amount of wildlife you can spot here. Within just a few hours on the first 4x4 safari, I saw more animals than in multiple national parks combined. Some of the wildlife commonly seen:
- Hundreds of capybaras lounging around waterholes
- White-tailed deer running freely across the savannas
- Spectacled caimans sunbathing by the lakes
- Tortoises and armadillos crossing the trails
- A huge variety of birds, including Orinoco geese, hoatzins, kingfishers, jabirus, and the great horned owl
- Giant anteaters (one of the most magical sightings!)
- Monkeys jumping between the gallery forests
And yes, jaguars live here. While spotting one is extremely rare, there are special expeditions for big-cat lovers, and every traveler secretly hopes to be one of the lucky ones.

Staying in Traditional Hatos (Ranches)
One of the highlights of this trip is staying in the hatos, the traditional ranches that have existed in the region for generations. Many have become private nature reserves, protecting huge areas of land and creating safe habitats for wildlife.
Life at the hatos is peaceful, slow, and wonderfully authentic. Mornings begin softly, with the plains still wrapped in mist and the sounds of wildlife waking up around you. Meals are hearty and delicious , traditional Llanero dishes that feel like they come from a completely different culture within Colombia: rustic, flavorful, and unforgettable. Throughout the day, you’ll see llaneros (the local cowboys) showcasing incredible skill on horseback, and by nightfall, everything slows down under a sky filled with endless stars.
Colombia has always felt like many countries in one, but here in Los Llanos, that sensation becomes even stronger. The experience isn’t just about spotting wildlife. It’s about how you explore.
Each activity reveals a different side of this vast region:
- 4x4 Safaris: Perfect for covering long distances across the open plains and getting close to wildlife that roams freely. It’s one of the best ways to feel the immensity of Los Llanos.
- Horseback Riding with Llaneros: Probably the most authentic way to understand life here. Riding through open savannas, crossing rivers, learning basic lasso techniques. It truly feels like stepping into another era, living the traditions that define this region.
- Canoe Safaris: At sunrise, the water becomes a mirror reflecting the colors of the sky. This is when kingfishers, hoatzins, capybaras, and other wetland species make their appearance, turning every moment into a quiet, cinematic scene.
- Nature Walks and River Trails: Ideal for spotting monkeys, unique birds, and smaller wildlife up close. These slow, intimate explorations strike a perfect balance between adventure, calmness, and connection with nature.
Why This Trip Feels So Special
-
It’s not mass tourism.
-
It’s not crowded.
-
It’s not staged.
Los Llanos is raw, real, and untouched, one of the most authentic travel experiences Colombia can offer. It’s a place for travelers who want to go beyond the classic destinations and discover a region that still feels like a secret.

Birding in Los Llanos: A Hidden Paradise at El Encanto de Guanapalo
You don’t often hear about Los Llanos in travel magazines, but this region is quietly becoming one of Colombia’s most exciting birding destinations, especially inside El Encanto de Guanapalo, a natural reserve that protects more than 270 bird species. Its mix of wetlands, palm savannas, and gallery forests creates the perfect habitat for an incredible variety of birds. Here you can spot the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin, the elegant Orinoco Goose, flocks of Roseate Spoonbills and ibises, vibrant kingfishers, and the unmistakable Horned Screamer echoing across the plains. At sunset, you might even hear the call of the Great Horned Owl emerging from the forest.
Birdwatching here feels effortless; whether you’re gliding by canoe at dawn, walking through quiet forest trails, or simply watching the savannas come alive with movement and sound. For any nature lover or birder seeking an authentic and uncrowded experience, Los Llanos is truly one of Colombia’s most underrated wildlife paradises.

A Journey That Can Be Tailor-Made
Whether you’re into wildlife photography, horseback riding, birdwatching, cultural immersion, or slow travel, this experience can be perfectly adapted to what you love. You can focus on wildlife, adventure, landscapes, or even ranch culture, the region offers countless possibilities. If you want to live this adventure just like I did, you can book the Colombian Wildlife safari Tour or customize it to match your travel style. This is one of those journeys that stays with you, not just for the animals you see, but for the way Los Llanos makes you feel.
Of course, there are destinations in Colombia that are relatively well-known to tourists and travellers these days:the Coffee Region, parts of the Caribbean coast, major cities like Bogotá and Medellín, that are all spots that are firmly established on the traveller trail in Colombia. Yet, the magic of this country is that there are still so many places that have barely been discovered by travellers: one of those places is Los Llanos Orientales, or Eastern Plains.
